Winter Grant Scheme

Dear Parent/Carer

Winter Grant Scheme

We are writing to make sure you have all the information you need to access the food vouchers that replace your child/ren’s free school meals during the Christmas break period. This is part of the new COVID Winter Grant Scheme, where a meal a day for children in receipt of free school meals is covered during the holidays as well as term time.

There are two parts to the scheme – food and fuel. This email/letter is about food vouchers. Brighter Futures for Children (BFfC) will contact you separately about how to access additional help with your fuel/water bills this winter. The aim of the scheme is to give you peace of mind in the run up to Christmas when many of the usual services may be closed or operating reduced hours.

We are working with BFfC and Reading Borough Council to make sure you get your allocated food voucher/s and activate them before 18 December 2020. They must be used by 2 January 2021.

The vouchers are for £30 per child (to cover the two weeks). They can be spent in one of the following supermarkets.  They can only be used for food items.

The supermarkets are:

  • Tesco
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Asda
  • Waitrose
  • M&S food
  • McColl’s (including RS McColl’s and Martin’s)
  • Aldi

We will arrange for your unique code to be sent to you shortly by email. It will come from Edenred – look out for the email in your junk folder in case it goes into there

If you have access to email, the internet and a smart phone or laptop, it’s easy to get your eGift card online.

Here’s what you will need to do:
1. Copy your unique 16-digit eCode/s
2. Go to
3. Enter the 16-digit eCode (you can enter more than one eCode if you have more than one
to redeem)
4. Select a supermarket
5. Enter the amount and add to basket
6. Checkout and enter the email address you would like the eGift card sent to
7. Your eGift card will be processed and sent (please allow up to 24 hours for it to be
delivered to your inbox).

You can then use it at the till to pay for food and groceries. Some supermarkets will accept the eGift card online for home deliveries.

If you don’t have any online access, we can arrange for you to receive a printed voucher instead. If you would like us to do this, please call the school, identify which supermarket you would like it for and we will do our best to get it safely to you. As we close on 17th December, we will not be able to print any vouchers after this date.

If you have any further difficulties, contact the One Reading Community Hub on 0808 189 4325 and say it’s about the COVID Winter Grant Scheme vouchers, quoting your unique 16-digit code. They will be able to check if there’s a problem and if it’s been activated/used.

The One Reading Community Hub can also help you with urgent prescription needs, debt, loneliness, stress and anxiety.
